Leiland saw this transformation as a gift and so decided it was her duty
to help out those less fortunate. Many in her town called upon her to help
them with all types of jobs, from lifting heavy things in the fields and
carrying them far distances, to entertaining the wee children while the women
got the canning done for winter time. This went on for many years, till one
winter day when the snow was coming down very heavily, and there was no end
in sight, Roran asked his child to fly up high to see if she could tell when
the storm might end. Besides he had said, “Don’t you ever wonder what’s up
there?”
Even at 19 years of age, Leiland still wanted to please her father so despite the cold and her fear of flying too high, she set her mind to the task. Up, up, up she flew, much higher than she had ever gone before. The storm was not nearly as large as they had thought, and was passing their small village even as she continued her flight up. She came level with the clouds, but still she continued to fly up as something above the clouds seemed to glitter invitingly. Leiland was passing the boundary of the shimmering place; it was to her amazement a city. She couldn’t believe her eyes. Everything here was sparkling and beautiful just like the sunlight reflecting on a pool of water. Leiland felt surprisingly comfortable in this strange land above the clouds, as though she belonged here. |
